Chapter Twenty-Nine: Hyena and Hare

After a year in Mostul Ûbar, Poleen Juvukis, as Kontzulê Polênu Juvilêus, navigates noble society with ease, mentored by Konlul Nobûn and Mulôs Teverish. During the Isumtobwo Nedilû festival, she visits the Ondômêtêsê Temple to meet Îûmuselermô Sêleveru Juvonis, a young Juvonis priestess with the Living Eyes. Sêleveru, using Light and Dark magic, probes Poleen’s soul, confirming her Juvilêus lineage but revealing she’s not Milôkêsku, chosen by the Four Queens. In a shared vision, Sêleveru demands to know who sent Poleen back from death, uncovering a menacing presence in the Listening Void, not the Nameless Son but an unknown evil. Poleen, gripped by fear, nearly strangles Sêleveru, who collapses. At Kinmôl Point, Nobûn reveals Emerotô Juvilêus’s yostul ambitions, spurred by their mother Nestolu and sister Elemên’s death, with the Written Stones as a kingmaker gambit. Poleen, unsettled by the void’s evil and her violent reaction, fears its implications but resolves to focus on her vengeance against Nedrich nâ Hilêômbrâ and Berjer Fendênus, preparing for The Undaunted’s return.
