Chapter Forty-Eight: Castles and Pearls

Kinesee and Alu defend her sand palace from the Migu Tortoise Fank on their coastal settlement’s beach, only for Shadows and Taken to attack, killing Odet and turning Uncle Dom and Papa into monsters. The sisters hide behind Fank, then flee to a cave beneath an oak, using Kinesee’s glowing pearl to summon Solineus, who promises to come as a Shadow probes their refuge but retreats from the light and Tengkur the goat. After a sleepless night, they return home at dawn, finding corpses and gathering supplies, but Papa’s appearance as a Taken outside their coop forces them to huddle in fear, clinging to Solineus’ distant voice for hope as their world collapses around them.
