Chapter Forty-Six: Reunions and Departures

Ivin leads Eliles, Solineus, Lelishen, Tokodin, and Rinold south from Istinjoln, finding Ervinhin abandoned and Merutven burning as Shadows close in, pushing them to reach the Fost by morning. Arriving exhausted, they learn Lord Lovar was murdered on the Eve of Snows, leaving Eredin as clan head, who opts to stay and fight with volunteers, accepting Ivin’s Crystal Sword to kill Shadows. Solineus departs to save a fisher family from Taken, while the others board the overcrowded Luxun ship Entiyu Emoño, secured by Lelishen’s favor with Captain Intœño, as Shadows and Taken overrun the docks, freezing the bay. Eliles’ flames falter against a giant Shadow—Ulrikt’s voice taunting—forcing a desperate leap to the ship, where she reunites with Jinbin, and Ivin briefs Intœño on their foe, their escape to Herald’s Watch marred by loss and lingering threats.
