WoG Chapter 58

From Sundering the Gods

Chapter Fifty-Eight: River of Ghosts[edit | edit source]

Ivin and Kinesee navigate the strategic and personal challenges of leading an army south from Green Mountain toward Endelêun, guided by ancient maps and the cryptic motivations of the Ironwing and Lord Priest Ulrikt. The chapter alternates between Ivin’s pragmatic leadership and Kinesee’s introspective journey, culminating in the discovery of a mysterious aqueduct and unsettling Wiirê reactions.

Ivin’s POV: Ivin, atop Green Mountain’s pyramid, oversees a strained encampment, relieved that the Dulûmbolis threat has diminished but concerned about feeding his large army. With Morik, Meliu, and the Wiirê prisoners Lucky and Grunt, he reviews maps identifying Setemêz (Green Mountain), Mekelên, Jûmjôlu, and Endelêun, the latter a walled city near Tomarok, aligning with the Ironwing’s directive and Ulrikt’s fixation in the Codex of Sol. Ivin grapples with Ulrikt’s manipulation, suspecting the Dark Waters Cult also targets Tomarok to free Hîmr, and probes Meliu about the Eight Lights Prophecy, which ominously predicts his death. Despite this, he plans to march south with 500 cavalry and 3,000 infantry, leaving Polus to command Green Mountain’s defenses. Choosing an ancient road toward Jûmjôlu to avoid Wiirê attention, Ivin’s army veers off course, prompting him to follow a river, hoping it leads to Endelêun. His strategic acumen balances immediate logistical needs with the looming prophetic and supernatural threats, tempered by a resigned acceptance of his potential fate.

Kinesee’s POV: Kinesee, frustrated by her limited swordsmanship and the constant pressure to stay behind, asserts her place beside Ivin, finding validation in his reluctant respect. Riding south, she reflects on the boredom of their month-long march and the historical significance of Jûmjôlu’s ruins, sparking curiosity about its builders. Meliu’s discussion of the Dark Sword Prophecy unsettles her, naming Ivin as the Warlord Choerkin and hinting at Kinesee as the “Lady of the Lion,” possibly linked to Rin, suggesting she’ll be a young mother. This revelation, coupled with Leto’s persistent attention, stirs emotional turmoil, though Lucky and Grunt’s cries of “Zimpotû utûê unô” redirect focus to distant hills. Leading a scouting party, Kinesee revels in galloping through a cleared grassy field, revealing a stone aqueduct lined with Ofdôlus alloy, delivering pristine water. The Wiirê’s fear of Endelêun, described as a “city of ghosts” on Meliu’s map, deepens the mystery, leaving Kinesee to grapple with her prophetic role and the eerie implications of their destination.
