Chapter Thirty-Four: Ambush Choke[edit | edit source]

Ivin, Pikarn, and Tokodin lead wardens and Colok in the Ambush Chokes, targeting priests carrying the Sliver of Star. Puxele signals the attack, and arrows, stones, and Colok spears slaughter most of the fifty-six holies, but High Priestess Sedut unleashes a deadly aura with the artifact, shredding attackers before vanishing, fleeing south on horseback. Ivin’s group pursues, joined by Zjin, but loses her trail in the foothills, rallying fresh horses at Ervinhin. Wardens there report no sighting, and Ivin sends Zjin east while planning to warn Choerkin Fost via riders, doubting their odds against Sedut’s power. Frigid winds force shelter in a cave, where Tokodin, rolling dice and clutching poison, doubts Sedut’s capture, lamenting war’s toll as Ivin concedes their chance may be lost, haunted by the massacre’s moral cost.
