WoG Chapter 54

From Sundering the Gods

Chapter Fifty-Four: Silent Talker Screaming[edit | edit source]

Meliu, recovering from her battle with the Yellow-Eye Crone, leads a slow march back to Green Mountain with Polus, their Silone companions, and two Yellow-Eye prisoners, Lucky and Grunt. Struggling with fatigue and the prisoners’ resistance, Meliu faces communication barriers, their blank stares and occasional spittle testing her patience. On the fifth day, the Yellow-Eyes’ screams of “tehemeto” herald a massive, invisible serpent-like creature that crushes several men, forcing Meliu to unleash Light and Dark prayers to distract it, while Polus’s pike attack fails. Climbing trees to survive, Meliu learns the Yellow-Eyes can see the tehemeto, revealing their utility despite their fear. Over days of evading the persistent predator, the group endures repeated tree-bound waits, with Meliu mastering arboreal sleep. Reaching Green Mountain, the prisoners’ terror at the pyramid—named “Dulûmbolis”—prompts Meliu to connect their fear to a severed, calcified monkey hand, deducing it belongs to necromantic creatures beneath the pyramid. Communicating with Lucky, she identifies “Dulûmbolis” as undead killer monkeys, likely responsible for earlier disappearances. Determined to secure the camp, Meliu resolves to hunt these creatures, challenging Polus’s hope for rest, as she prepares to confront a supernatural threat tied to the pyramid’s dark power.
