Chapter Seventy-Two: Hollowing Breaths edit

Solineus continues his perilous ascent of Hîmr’s Eye’s Hammerfall, the Twelfth Foundation, to retrieve Pîlôstar’s coin and secure alliances with the Eight Kingdoms. Guided by Morik and supported by Temerêun porters, he progresses through Camps Ûlf-Hôtindîn, Îrginhîn, and Zjindinfôk, acclimating to thinning air with disciplined breathing and hydration. At Zjindinfôk, a glowing boulder provides warmth, and Morik recounts the myth of Hîmr, the Sleeping Dead, whose battle with the Trickster raised the mountain, possibly stealing its air to survive entrapment in lava, fueling beliefs he remains alive, linked to the shrine. As Solineus and Morik ascend alone, priests bless the climb, delayed by storms but cleared on the fifth day. Solineus faces Râkêr’s Rope and Yôgul’s Fall, using the Twins to aid his climb, discovering a murdered pilgrim’s corpse, suggesting foul play. At the summit, a warm, barren plateau littered with dead climbers reveals the obsidian shrine. Alternating breezes force air into or out of his lungs, nearly killing him until the Lady intervenes, breathing through him to stabilize his lungs. Solineus seizes the coin but collapses, revived by the Lady’s guidance to reach breathable air. Exhausted, he rests on the warm stone, wrapped in fur, preparing for the descent.
