Chapter Fifty-Three: Dealing in Darkness[edit | edit source]

In Aprelêu’s undercity, Poleen confronts Nedrich nâ Hilêômbrâ, who seeks the donu-honêsh cache’s location, accompanied by a score of Notoholis men. Gibelê, suspected of betrayal, is present, complicating her trust. Poleen, joined by Âvorê, Modû Nosohûm, Hovêen tû Sedlômu, and Silk Devils, engages in a brutal melee, killing nâ Hilêômbrâ after a duel atop rubble, avenging Ezeldu’s murder. She reveals to Nedrich that Berjer Fendênus has the cigar box map, deflecting attention. Using joluk liqueur to stabilize a wounded Silk Devil, Fidôlin, Poleen sends him to a healer with escorts, retaining Hovêen, Nosohûm, and two Devils for her next move. Binding Âvorê’s wounds, she prepares to confront either an honest Captain Humkil or a deceitful foe at the donu cache’s location, aiming to expose the Compunêu Trade Consortium or Notoholis, secure Nicôdî tû Dêidontâ’s Written Jewels, and gain Notoholis access, advancing her vengeance against Fendênus while aligning with Kontzûl Emerotô’s yostul ambitions.
