Chapter Thirty-Two: Scat and Blood

Dareun awakens in a cell, beaten and dosed with Cloud Water, interrogated by Woxlin, who accuses him of Ulrikt’s murder. Denying it, Dareun deflects to Meris, but Woxlin returns as Ulrikt, revealing his survival and staging his death to flush out the real assassin, forcing Dareun to confess with Eliles’ safety threatened. Ulrikt, shape-shifting, heals Dareun’s face briefly, offering execution or torture with Sundering, leaving him to choose. Meanwhile, Eliles prays at Etinbin’s shrine, learning from Woxlin of Dareun’s confession, devastated yet vowing revenge. Sandele guides her to Dareun’s cell, where he, battered, begs her not to save him, warning against Choerkin trust. Eliles swears by Januel to honor his wish, planning to seek Ilpen for gossip, but guards block Upper Istinjoln. Back in his cell, Dareun confesses to Woxlin, signing a scroll, only for a Broldun inquisitor to take over, torturing him brutally despite his compliance, breaking his face and thumb as Woxlin abandons him.
