Chapter Thirty-Six: Sacrificial Souls edit

Solineus, defying Captain Edmordô’s reluctance, leads a raid on Rôqwu’s Temple Mount of Yungilêtunu to steal Histê sacrificial children, aiming to provoke their fleet and protect Emudar islands (Ch. 31). With Adinvan, Sîu, and Silone warriors, he scouts the filthy port city from the Lady Moon, targeting the cliff-top pyramid. A gong signals Histê awareness as Silone longships approach, prompting a stealthy climb up a rocky ravine. Sîu, using poisoned darts, eliminates guards, guiding Solineus to an empty slave pen. Following children’s voices, they navigate the pyramid’s tunnels, freeing four young islanders from a pit and over 400 captives, including Sîu’s brother, Nêkulû, from caged cells. As they flee, Histê warriors pursue, but Solineus, wielding the Twins, realizes the children’s sacrificial value prevents attack, redirecting the fight to the beach. Chanting Gers’voresh-kûmjotukî—the Wisewoman’s name (Ch. 19)—he leads a fierce defense, until the pyramid erupts, revealing a massive winged serpent, Môgôdûu, destroying the temple. Histê warriors kneel in worship, allowing the Silone to escape with the children. Sîu claims Solineus summoned Kûmjoto-Kî, a dragon, not Môgôdûu, as a Boboru fleet appears, threatening pursuit. Overloading the longships, Solineus heads south to Toltûk, balancing the raid’s success with the looming naval chase and the Twins’ mysterious power.
