Chapter Eighty-Three: Fire Dancers[edit | edit source]

Solineus, now deep in the Ilû-Strono Plains, encounters the Ilu-Silvstro, a lion-like people, after a tense standoff sparked by his unexpected fluency in their language, Ilu-Shiludân—a mystery even to himself. Recognized as a friend of Ivin Choerkin, Solineus is warmly welcomed by Yumûlu and her pride, who invite him to join their "war," which he learns is not a battle but a series of competitive games to hone skills against their enemies, the Hundred Nations. Amid a vibrant nighttime festival of fire dancing and skull-adorned rituals, Solineus is treated for a lingering wound from his Klondihîk escape, enduring the Ilu’s unconventional healing methods with a mix of humor and unease. As he integrates into the pride’s camp, meeting the imposing Rêmwûer, Solineus prepares to participate in their games, seeking sustenance and camaraderie while grappling with his isolation in an unfamiliar land. His journey westward toward Mulshuhar remains uncertain, but the Ilu’s acceptance offers a temporary haven as he navigates the plains’ deceptive terrain and his own enigmatic abilities.
