ToP Chapter 63

Chapter Sixty-Three: Kingdom for Storms

Solineus and his party—Rinold, Puxele, Edlmir, Mirkel, and Ogdun—face a sudden mountain storm while awaiting Morik’s return with stonebreakers, narrowly escaping a flash flood. Morik delivers five packs of stonebreakers, warning of their volatility to firelings (te-xe) and demonstrating their use with fireline twine and sulfur-tipped firesticks. The group, reduced to three packs after Ogdun and Mirkel’s accidental detonations, reaches the Bollybone Trail and the Ferminki Bridge, a massive stone structure over the Gediswon River. Solineus and Rinold drill holes into the bridge’s keystones and pillars using the Twins, hastening the work, but Tek outriders interrupt, forcing Rinold and Edlmir to flee. Solineus, clinging to a pillar, sets and lights the stonebreakers, igniting a chain of explosions that collapse multiple arches and pillars, killing nearby Tek. Caught in the blast’s debris and swept into the river, Solineus drowns a struggling Tek but is dragged under by a whirlpool, succumbing to the current. The Lady’s voice intervenes, proclaiming his survival, as he faces apparent death.
