WoG Chapter 38
Chapter Thirty-Eight: Bone Fingers edit
Meliu, roused by dawn shouts in a fog-draped camp, scrambles to a scaffold tower, spotting armed men converging north of the pyramid. With Polus, she navigates a chaotic throng, using divine Light to clear a path and reveal a man, Adrin, rigid yet breathing, sprawled on a crumbling wall with no visible wounds. A soldier recounts striking a hissing, Forge-born creature dragging Adrin through the fog, but it fled. As screams echo, Meliu and Polus pursue, witnessing another man vanish underground, stiff as a log, despite their desperate efforts to save him. Discovering two necrotic puncture wounds on Adrin’s leg, resembling spider bites, Meliu suspects a connection to a palisade-climbing creature. Unearthing a severed, calcified hand with pincer-like fingers, she confirms the predator’s unnatural nature. As fog clears, a dozen missing men are reported, prompting Polus to order armed search parties. Investigating the disappearance site, they uncover a concealed tunnel, too tight for Polus but suitable for miners led by Bîdorik. With prayers for Life failing Adrin, whose condition baffles healers, Meliu grapples with an unknown, possibly undead foe, rallying her forces to hunt for caves and answers in a haunted, ancient city, their survival hinging on her leadership and divine insight.
