Chapter Fifty-One: Reunion at the Gate[edit | edit source]

Ivin arrives at Forest’s Gate, a sprawling encampment, to rally support and gather intelligence before marching south to Green Mountain. Greeted by Danwek Bulubar, Ivin confirms the Malstefnê’s retreat, attributing it to their king’s assassination, and credits Kinesee’s trade negotiations with Helmveline and the Helelindin. He tasks Danwek with maintaining daily communications between Forest’s Gate, Foggy Vale, and Green Mountain, learning of disappearances and Yellow-Eye slaver activity in the south. Kinesee, defying Ivin’s wish for her to stay, insists on joining the campaign, citing greater safety with the army. Her reunion with Alu, Tudwan, Ilpen, and Leto sparks tensions, as Leto’s lingering affection and opposition to her plans clash with Alu’s resolve to search for their captured brother Daksin. Kinesee recruits Alu, Tudwan, and reluctantly Leto for the journey, leveraging her sister’s swordsmanship and family loyalty. Ilpen, tempted to join, is persuaded to stay and care for Kinesee’s goat, Tengkur. As Ivin plans fortifications and navigates Kingdomer road-building motives, Kinesee prepares to confront him with her decision, using their marital bond to assert her place at his side, while the group braces for the dangers awaiting in Green Mountain.
