Chapter Forty-Eight: Southern Winds

Meliu awakens blind and weakened in a tent, tended by High Priestess Sedut, her sister Deelee, and healer Bralena, who counteract the Dark’s toll from her actions on the Soaring Gull. Learning the Tek fleet devastated Silone ships but hasn’t landed, Meliu, regaining her sight, probes Sedut’s motives, suspecting ties to Ulrikt or the Lord Priest’s Face, and secures her pledge to fight alongside the clans. At the shore, Ivin, Solineus, and Polus Broldun, joined by Inslok, deduce the Tek’s strategy—burning ships to starve the Silone and drive them south to Winter Home for a decisive strike, blaming them for the Rot’s spread. Inslok vows to monitor the coast, sending Limereu to escort the Silone south. In a heated clan council, Rikis and Ivin rally the seven clans, overcoming northern resistance from Torik Broldun, who strategically aligns with Ivin’s call to unite at Winter Home for a stand against the Tek nations (Hidreng, Thon, Brotna, Yulkip, Muduer). Meliu, impressed by Ivin’s leadership and Torik’s calculated support, agrees to ride south after a day’s rest, as the clans prepare for a unified battle. The chapter blends recovery, strategic insight, and clan unification, highlighting Meliu’s mistrust, Ivin’s diplomacy, and the looming threat of annihilation.
