Chapter Forty-Seven: Wings in Fire

Eliles and her companions at The Salty Frog tavern in Herald’s Watch discuss the reclusive Skywatch oracles, who remain hidden after Eliles’ encounter with Temeru. Temeru, now High Oracle, unexpectedly joins them, revealing concerns about a massive, elusive entity within the Fire of the Sliver of Star, corroborated by others’ sightings, and questioning whether Meris, seen in Istinjoln, was the Lord Priest’s Face—a mythical shapeshifter. This sparks distrust, as Temeru suggests someone among them could be the Face, and reveals Meliu was sent to Choerkin Fost by Ulrikt before the Eve of Snows. Eliles confronts Jinbin, who admits he and Meliu left Istinjoln under Woxlin’s orders, carrying a scroll urging Meliu to flee, but denies knowing her library research. The revelation strains their trust, and a fleeting glimpse of a massive, blade-like shape slicing through the Fire heightens their unease, prompting Eliles and Jinbin to retreat to the Frog, wary of a colossal entity drawn to the Sliver’s flames. The chapter weaves suspicion, supernatural mystery, and fractured alliances, highlighting Eliles’ leadership challenges and the ominous presence within the Fire amidst lingering questions about Meliu’s past actions.
