Chapter Forty-Six: Bear Talk

Pikarn leads a small Silone group through rain-soaked foothills with Oldenu, aiming to ally with the Colok against Shadows and Taken. Six days from Berul, they find signs of recent Colok battles with Taken, but Shadows soon stalk them, forcing Pikarn to use water-filled wineskins as a defense. Rikis’s horn blast draws a Colok hunting party, who use the Silone as bait to ambush the Shadows, revealing a tense but cooperative dynamic. At Snow’s Eye, Pikarn negotiates with Zjin, learning three Edan headed north, possibly to the Steaming Lakes, to study the Queen Mother’s Celestial Gate. Proposing a Choerkin-Colok alliance to settle the Sobuno River islands and purge Kaludor of Taken, Pikarn secures Zjin’s commitment to rally tribes and confer with Grolkan at Istinjoln. Despite the looming threat of the demon Marukane and Edan secrecy, Pikarn’s strategic vision and rapport with the Colok lay the groundwork for a united front, bolstered by Oldenu’s wry acknowledgment of his persistent optimism.
