Ivin, atop the Kingdomer-built wall, grapples with the Malstefnê army’s sudden withdrawal, attributed to the enigmatic Face of Ulrikt, though doubts linger among clan lords like Leto Ravinrin, who reveals whispers of crowning Ivin king—a title he vehemently rejects. Leto’s resentment over Kinesee’s marriage to Ivin surfaces, straining their bond. Ivin, wary of Ulrikt’s motives, learns the Face was present at his father Kotin’s death, possibly as the servant Joslin, who vanished after Tokodin’s poisoning. Chapter Forty-Eight: Faithless Facing

The Face, appearing as postulant Deelee and then Ulrikt, confirms orchestrating the Malstefnê’s retreat by manipulating events in Notôlhof, ensuring a year’s respite and weakening the Malôbund. Ivin, wary of Ulrikt’s motives, learns the Face was present at his father Kotin’s death, possibly as the servant Joslin, who vanished after Tokodin’s poisoning. In a late-night meeting with Kinesee, Roplin, and Inisfer, Ivin theorizes Joslin as the Face, a shape-shifting priest responsible for multiple murders. Facing the moral weight of using the Face’s ruthlessness, Ivin plans to march south to Green Mountain, preparing for an inevitable confrontation with the Face, who may target him per prophecy, while Kinesee reluctantly agrees to stay at Forest’s Gate, as the group resolves to kill the elusive demon when the time comes.
