Kinesee and Alu hide in a chicken coop from Taken kin—Papa (Iku), Oleu, Dom, Medlin, and Ito—eating scavenged food as their settlement lies in ruins. Alu kills Dom with a spear when he finds them, sparking a desperate run to a dory, where Medlin and Ito drag it back until Solineus arrives, beheading Ito and freeing the boat. Learning of Kotin Choerkin’s poisoning by Tokodin—whose head she finds impaled—Meliu bluffs past guards with Ulrikt’s scroll, claiming ties to Ivin and Eredin. At Skywatch, she reunites with Temeru, who reveals Meris’ death and the scroll’s magical shift from “Flee Kaludor” to “Sail to Tomarok,” stunning Meliu with its implications. Amid rising anti-holy sentiment and fears of Shadows’ ice reaching the Watch, Meliu grapples with Tokodin’s betrayal and her next move, her resolve hardening as she questions Ulrikt’s intent and her place in the unfolding chaos.
