Meris, High Oracle of Skywatch, feels stifled in the cramped Hall of Bontore during the Night of Bones, missing Skywatch’s starry solitude. Tasked with divining fates, she reads smoothed bones with precision, detached until Eliles’ turn. Noting the girl’s doubly smoothed bone, Meris names her “Priestess of Sol’s Fire” of Istinjoln, tying her to Ulrikt with unusually strong cracks, suspecting his intent to control her. High priests’ honest bones follow, rekindling Meris’ passion, until Ulrikt’s turn. Recognizing a smoothed, enchanted clavicle—impossible under its deadly wards—Meris realizes her summons by the Lord’s Face was to kill Ulrikt, confirmed by his knowing whisper. Striking the bone, an explosion blinds and wounds her, killing Ulrikt instantly. As consciousness fades, Meris grasps her role in his doom, hoping to survive and understand why.

Chapter Thirty-one: Written in Glory
