Chapter Twenty-Four: Failing Visions[edit | edit source]
Meris, High Oracle of Skywatch, arrives at Istinjoln after a grueling wagon journey, summoned by the Lord’s Face for the Eve of Snows. Aching and sleepless in the monastery’s dark chambers, she longs for Skywatch’s starry refuge. Ulrikt greets her warmly in his lavish chambers, showcasing ancient artifacts of unknown origin, revealing their shared history—her prophecy at his ascension forty years prior: “You will get to know she who writes your destiny.” He insists she’s that oracle, seeking to know her personally before she breaks bones for the grand Eve, aligned with the Road of Living Stars. Meris, wary from the Lord’s Face’s threats, probes his intent, admitting her identity as Skywatch itself, while her guilt over murdering Peneluple Choerkin slips out. Ulrikt listens intently to her mundane past, offering no clear purpose beyond prophecy, leaving her puzzled by his interest as wine loosens her tongue.
