Chapter Five: Predator Street

Poleen rides sidesaddle toward Vitolêô with Gibelê, the cigar box hidden near the Pillar of Ilûmnê, her Forgetting veiling memories of Ezeldu and Benê. Vitolêô’s tan buildings and grand Cathedral of Ermûñô Tebedêz stir childhood awe, now tainted by Ezeldu’s imprisonment in the Citadel of Netelu Dullûs. Gibelê, a former Naval Guard, fears the city’s treachery but escorts her to the House of the Yellow Leaf. There, Trademaster Nokumor Orpingtun reveals the box held indilus root, not just cigars, and panics at Poleen’s mention of donu-honêsh, burning evidence of Humeric tû Yulêz’s involvement. He confirms Ezeldu’s arrest, likely for indilus, and urges Poleen to leave, promising discreet inquiries. A sudden hailstorm greets her exit, and Gibelê, sheltering nearby, suggests rooms at the Dew Flower Inn. Poleen agrees to wait while he investigates Ezeldu’s fate, her resolve steeled despite the Notoholis Aprelêu’s shadow.
