Kinesee, bound and hooded in a wagon, confronts a high priestess, likely Sedut, who questions her about an assassination attempt and the mysterious Nesfereum’s motives, dismissing her claim that Solineus is near. As chaos erupts outside, Solineus storms the wagon, driving off the priestess with his Twins and rescuing Kinesee, who reveals Leto Ravinrin’s betrayal. Solineus confronts Leto in the Ravinrin tent, nearly throttling him, but Semerun’s testimony sways him to spare the boy, though doubts linger. At the Choerkin tent, Solineus reunites with Rikis, learning of the Tek fleet’s attack on Silone ships and discussing the Edan’s presence as a deterrent. Meanwhile, Ivin Choerkin, carrying an unconscious Meliu from the beached Soaring Gull, entrusts her to Sedut for healing, unaware of her earlier encounter with Kinesee. Stumbling into Solineus, Ivin learns of Sedut’s duplicity, and they rush to the tent, finding it empty. Ivin, fearing for Meliu’s life or worse, grapples with his decision to trust Sedut, while Solineus vows to confront her, as the Tek fleet’s threat looms over New Fost’s defenders, led by Commander Pikarn, preparing for a potential land assault. The chapter weaves intrigue, betrayal, and desperate reunions, highlighting Kinesee’s resilience, Solineus’ protective fury, and Ivin’s tormented trust amidst an escalating conflict.
