Solineus rides Ilpen’s wagon into Istinjoln, enduring Lelishen’s chatter—quiet until sparked—while nursing journey-induced aches. Lelishen shares family tales and Istinjoln’s tunnel maze, hinting at shrines as Solineus probes for Eve of Snows details, learning Ulrikt rarely appears publicly, dimming his assassination hopes. Ilpen confirms the festival’s food and booze, noting Pikarn’s wardens departing as they arrive, suggesting trouble. At Istinjoln’s gates, Solineus marvels at its defenses, contrasting it with Choerkin Fost. Lelishen’s stare at Eliles, followed by a flimsy lie, piques his suspicion of her pilgrim facade. Stretching sore limbs in the bailey, Solineus eyes the fortress’ trap-like design, plotting a lone strike on Ulrikt, joining Ilpen and Lelishen for a meal while keeping a wary eye on her hidden depths. | |||
