Chapter Forty-Nine: Swarming Maggots[edit | edit source]
Meliu and Deelee equip themselves with sealskin boots and dresses in the Fost, witnessing a surreal standoff where Taken meditate under a great Shadow’s ice-making trance, fought by Eredin with the Crystal Sword and Sedut’s energy. After Eredin saves Meliu from pursuing Shadows, they secure passage on the Januel’s Grace when Captain Lodol kills Simund to fit them aboard, his cold logic clashing with her fury as they sail from the besieged docks. Struggling with seasickness, eased by Storm Tea, Meliu reaches Herald’s Watch after days at sea, her relief tempered by the overcrowded harbor and lingering distrust of Lodol, as Deelee’s joy contrasts with her grim outlook on their new haven.
