Solineus dreams of the Lady, who reassures him that his failures in Istinjoln are not absolute, urging him to help Ivin Choerkin move past his love for Eliles to lead their people, while warning of a future threat, the Craven Raven. Awakening to a tense camp, Solineus learns a Hidreng army—hundreds of cavalry and thousands of footmen—has arrived early, breaking Overseer Iro Adinfin’s promised two-week reprieve. Joining Ivin and Polus, Solineus boldly meets Iro halfway, learning the bishop of Sin Medor’s arrival has forced Iro’s hand, demanding immediate acceptance of Hokandite missionaries to convert Silone or face conflict. Recognizing their military disadvantage, the trio negotiates two days to prepare their people, avoiding immediate violence but wary of the bishop’s influence. Iro’s deference to the bishop hints at her formidable power, leaving Solineus and Ivin to strategize survival, with Polus grudgingly accepting the necessity of compliance to buy time, as the Silone’s fragile position teeters under the looming threat of religious and military pressure.
