Solineus Mikjehemlut, aboard the Emudar ship Evening Sky in Mulshahar, revels in the familiar Silone tongue but grapples with a hangover and the weight of his fragmented past. Reunited with his father, Adinvan, he learns he was sent to Choerkin Fost before the Eve of Snows to warn of a Thonian plot involving Wyvern’s Flash, a volatile substance, though Adinvan’s caution delayed the mission, leaving Solineus to question if he could have prevented the clans’ calamity. At the Mulshahar Exchange, Solineus secures his fortune with Sêeloru Ledun, arranging for a trusted banker fluent in Kingdomer and willing to learn Silone, while Adinvan humorously negotiates for a luxurious chair. Seeking a river route to reconnect the Emudar with the Silone clans in the Dragonspan Mountains, Solineus commissions a detailed chart of the Monsoon Strait from Captain Edmordô, striking a deal for 1,000 smedên and a 30% share of future trade profits, with Edmordô agreeing to guide them due to the strait’s treacherous waters. At Lancaster Builders, Solineus contracts three river-worthy longships for 13,000 smedên, to be delivered in two months, impressing Horik Lancaster with his wealth. To ensure safety, he meets Guardian Zerik Mô’od, paying 4,000 smedên for guard protection and a discreet message to Molikîn, learning of the enigmatic Smiling Men who hold true power in Mulshahar. As Solineus navigates the city’s politics and his newfound role as a wealthy lord, he plans to spend the next two months mastering Mulshahar’s ways and preparing for a perilous journey up the Mûulbon Delta, driven by a vision to reunite his scattered clan with their kin, while Adinvan marvels at his son’s audacious dealings and anticipates a reunion with Solineus’s mother.
