Their playful reprieve shatters when smoke from burning ships—Thonian and Hidreng warships—signals an approaching fleet, sparking panic among the coastal crowds. As Kinesee and Leto flee with her guards, led by Semerun, a chaotic crush separates them. Kinesee, knocked down and alone, clings to her pearl, calling for Solineus and receiving a mental response, suggesting his proximity. Leto finds her, but betrays her, leading her to a group who hood and seize her, revealing his duplicity. The chapter blends youthful innocence, escalating danger, and betrayal, highlighting Kinesee’s vulnerability and the looming threat of a Tek invasion against the backdrop of New Fost’s fragile safety.
