Poleen Juvukis, aboard the *Shupûtu* (*The Undaunted*), grapples with nightmares of chasing and killing her mother, Ezeldu, reflecting her guilt and rage. Reuniting with Âvorê, recovered from her delirious attack, and Sandorelê, she plans to sell Nicôdî’s gems in Mostul Ûbar’s Lapidary District to Môgudû Subar, aiming to fund vengeance against Nedrich nâ Hilêômbrâ and Berjer Fendênus tû Amdwol. Learning her father, Kontzûl Juvilêus, secretly married Ezeldu and trades with the Notoholis, Poleen adopts her contessa guise, Polênu Juvilêus, to seek his aid in identifying Notoholis leaders. Committing to deliver the indilus roots to Umdûwor, she aims to cement her reputation. As the ship nears Horsemen’s Coast, Poleen climbs the crow’s nest, spotting twelve flagless ships—Gorô and Korômonê—searching for a shipwreck or survivor, their purpose unclear, raising tension among the crew.
