Driven by duty to Eliles, his ward with feral magic, he ventures into the Pit of Deception, a bone-filled chamber, to alter her divination bone. For twelve years, he’s hidden her curse, and now he carves the Wanderer’s Star to guide her toward freedom beyond Istinjoln, weakening a rival crack of Bontore’s Wisdom. His task is interrupted by a hooded priest smoothing a sacred bear bone—meant for lord priests—risking the Slave Forges under Tezlonu.
