Ivin Choerkin, youngest son of Kotin, Lord of Herald’s Watch, grapples with his mother Peneluple’s memory and his father’s disdain for the Church amid news of the Ihomjo mine collapse. Ignoring Kotin’s protests, Ivin visits High Oracle Meris at Skywatch, seeking guidance on securing Istinjoln’s aid for the mines. Meris’ bone reading predicts love, danger, and travel, but offers no clear answers. Tensions rise as Kotin learns of secretive Broldun priests from Fermiden Abbey heading to Istinjoln, hinting at a power shift. Ordered by clan head Lovar, Ivin sails for Kaludor on the Sea Owl with cousin Eredin to join the Estertok Wardens, armed with his grandfather’s targe. Amid farewells, Ivin senses the weight of his mission and the uncertainty of his family’s future.
