Solineus awakens in a blue dream realm, where the mysterious lady credits his rescue of Kinesee for the Koest family’s trust, urging him to kill Lord Priest Ulrikt at Istinjoln before the Eve of Snows to save the girls, refusing to reveal her name. Iku, also dream-visited, gifts Solineus a Choerkin longsword and supplies, bidding him leave without farewells to spare Kinesee’s tears. Solineus departs Purdonis Bay, meeting Ilpen Gurer and his donkey Ears the Elder on a northern road, securing a ride to Istinjoln via Choerkin Fost. In Bloody Pebble, Solineus spots the slinger from Kinesee’s attack, convinces Ilpen to stay, and lures the bandit to a tavern room, knocking him out with a bottle. He binds and hangs the man from a tree, ensuring his death while leaving coins for burial, steeling himself for Ulrikt’s assassination with newfound resolve.
