Meris awakens injured in darkness, soon facing a resurrected Lord Priest Ulrikt, who claims Sol returned him from the Road of Living Stars—without the Sliver of Star—to lead the Silone into a new Panthenate era under the Prophecy of the Twelfth Star, tied to the Eye of the Fire Lion. Ulrikt heals Meris and offers her a choice between death or continued service, assigning her a final duty involving murder, which she accepts before departing Istinjoln in a wagon, wary of its troubles. Meanwhile, Dareun’s spirit, haunted by his torture and death, searches Istinjoln’s depths, discovering his and Ulrikt’s bodies in the oubliette, a pit for feral children, prompting him to question the Church’s treatment of such magic and Ulrikt’s true identity. The chapter intertwines Meris’ renewed purpose and Dareun’s revelations, exposing layers of deception and divine intrigue within Istinjoln’s decaying walls.

Eliles, Ivin, Solineus, Lelishen, Rinold, and Tokodin arrive at the Steaming Lakes via Zjin’s wolf sleds on the 25th of Yistole, five days post-Eve, facing icy winds and a steam-filled basin. Eliles, warmed by Ivin’s shy embrace, slides down an icy slope into the marsh, leading the group to an unnamed crypt guarded by Wakened Dead. Her feral flames light their path through a pristine marble tomb, revealing passive skeletons and a speaking, armed Wakened giant who invites dialogue after Eliles navigates the horde. Lelishen translates an earlier crypt as Old Hostorun, while Shadows and Taken approach, avoided via water. The group, wary of the Wakened and pursued by demons, follows the giant deeper, balancing hope for the Sliver of Star against the crypt’s eerie wonders and lurking threats.
Three days after the Eve of Snows, Meliu rides south with Jinbin, delivering Ulrikt’s sealed scroll to Choerkin Fost, savoring the freedom of the open road after years in Istinjoln’s tunnels. A warden warns of Shadows swarming Istinjoln, spurring their pace, but Meliu delays pushing the ponies, cherishing tranquility amid autumnal beauty. In Amdan, they swap mounts, and Jinbin presses her about Istinjoln’s “demons,” linking them to her Crack of Burdenis scars. Meliu admits the Codex of Sol’s reality but denies deeper knowledge, silencing him as suspicion grows about Ulrikt’s trust in her and Jinbin’s role. Warning the stablehand of northern peril, they ride on, Meliu grappling with Ulrikt’s foresight and her mission’s stakes, urging speed over ale to reach the Fost.
Ivin leads the wardens, Solineus, Eliles, Lelishen, and Ilpen from Istinjoln’s Shadow outbreak to a camp where Tokodin waits, shaken but alive. Amid thunder from the monastery, Ivin lights a lantern to signal Zjin’s Colok, learning from Lelishen that Ulrikt’s false Sliver failed to summon Sol, instead unleashing Shadows and a green-eyed lord needing the true Sliver. Eliles confirms Dareun’s ghostly warning, sparking tension with Pikarn, whom Solineus challenges. Ivin assigns Pikarn, Puxele, and most wardens to warn Choerkin Fost, while he, Eliles, Solineus, Lelishen, Tokodin, and Rinold head to the Steaming Lakes to secure the true Sliver from crypts guarded by Wakened Dead. Zjin arrives with wolf sleds, and despite initial reluctance, agrees to transport them north. At a snow-buried outpost, they rest briefly before dawn, boarding sleds—Ivin with Eliles, Solineus with Lelishen, Tokodin with Rinold and ale—embarking on a tense, wind-whipped journey to thwart the Shadows’ lord.
Dareun, a sundered ghost, watches Ulrikt plan a ritual with Sedut and Dunkol, revealing a false Sliver of Star meant to summon Sol’s hand. When Ulrikt possesses Dunkol with a Shadow, Dareun flees to awaken Solineus, guiding him to Eliles’ cell. Solineus, roused by Dareun, urges Eliles to escape as Ulrikt’s ritual begins, donning priest robes to raise the portcullis amid a reality-warping beam. Ivin and the wardens charge Istinjoln as the gates open, finding Shadows erupting from Ulrikt’s failed ritual, with Dunkol possessed and Ulrikt floating. Puxele’s arrows fail, and a massive Shadow entity breaches the sky, forcing a retreat. Solineus, Lelishen, and Ilpen join Ivin’s group, fleeing with Eliles as Shadows overrun Istinjoln, allying as Solineus (Emudar) and Ivin (Choerkin) vow to fight back with Colok aid.
Meliu, numbed by Dareun’s Sundering and Ulrikt’s resurrection, dozes in her Istinjoln cell, reliving the day in dreams where a serpent and raven prophecy a New Age via the Codex of Sol, linking Shadows to the Fire Lion’s burning eye. Ulrikt awakens her, entrusting a sealed scroll for High Priestess Adelin at Choerkin Fost’s Burning Rock in five days, urging speed and secrecy. Joined by Jinbin, a jovial monk with ale-laden ponies, Meliu rides south under moonlight, distracted by his brewing tales. A chilling pulse and celestial beam from Istinjoln interrupt their journey, echoing her Shrine of Burdenis trauma, spurring their ponies into a frantic trot as she recalls the serpent’s words, laughing despite the ominous portent.
Eliles joins Istinjoln’s priests at Ulrikt’s funeral, mourning Dareun amid a bleak Eve’s eve, noting all seven lord priests present, including Broldun’s, suggesting a pre-planned gathering. Sedut arrives, delivering the Sliver of Star, reviving Ulrikt from his sarcophagus. Ulrikt declares Dareun’s confession—blaming Choerkin—false, sundering him with the Sliver’s winds, proclaiming Holy War to summon the Sword of Sol against Choerkin. Eliles, enraged, summons feral flames, restrained by Dareun’s ghost calming her. As a sundered spirit, Dareun witnesses his execution, relieved Eliles relents, then meets Solineus and Lelishen. Solineus, seeing him, seeks aid to kill Ulrikt, and Dareun, bitter from betrayal, agrees to help protect Eliles, navigating his ghostly state amid Ulrikt’s war chant.

Eliles awakens with a scroll sewn into her robes, attending prayers before burning it in the kitchen hearth, shaken by Istinjoln’s silence on the Crack of Burdenis crisis. A maid announces a priest thrown to the thorns, and Eliles, suspecting Rovol’s fate for copying the scroll, joins Sandele and others on the wall. The bloody, tongue-less body in the vines confirms her fears, and guilt battles her resolve to feign innocence. Jumel speculates callously on Rovol’s crimes, while Eliles masks her emotions, fleeing to Dareun’s chambers. There, Woxlin reacts to the news, leaving to investigate, and Dareun comforts Eliles, linking her tears to a childhood memory of a similar punishment. She hides her role in Rovol’s death, clinging to survival as she nears her escape, haunted by the lesson of his demise.
Ivin and the wardens enter the Hall of Burdenis in the Crack of Burdenis, finding a sunlit shrine and a massacre of eyeless, marrow-sucked corpses. Diamond-dust wards litter the floor, and Ivin’s discovery of a locked book triggers a Shadow’s birth from the shrine, prompting a panicked retreat. Meliu claims the book, refusing to identify it, as Taken priests attack, killing Suvarn, who rises possessed. The group flees through tight tunnels and treacherous stairs, losing another to a Shadow’s wall ambush. Exhausted, they reach Ervinhin, finding Modan’s camp abandoned, with Colok tracks suggesting pursuit. In the house of the dead, Meliu identifies Loepus but notes Tokodin’s absence, hinting at Colok capture. Pikarn suspects a brewing conflict, and Ivin, drained, collapses into bed, pondering the Shadows’ year-long presence and Istinjoln’s failures.
Ivin and the Estertok Wardens, led by Pikarn, ride from Omindi Pass into the Crack of Burdenis caves, guided by Meliu, who grins eerily at Ivin. Leaving Modan to guard camp, they enter a whale-oil-blackened cave, suspecting Istinjoln collapsed Ihomjo mines to seal it. Meliu warns Shadows are drawn to prayers, recounting her escape via the glowing Tears of the Gods. Torches reveal a honey-scented, rat-infested descent past eerie Vanquished God carvings in the Hall of Faces. Tight passages and a steep climb challenge the group, leading to the brilliantly lit Fool’s Haul ceiling above the Crack’s chasm. A splintered message post marks the shrine’s edge, and a harrowing stair descent ends in a gore-strewn guardroom. Meliu seeks the Chamber of the Lost, finding it empty of books like the Codex of Sol. Despite the loss, she leads them toward the shrine, Rinold confirming their eerie arrival as Ivin notes familiar wall pocks, wary of lurking Shadows.
Solineus awakens in a blue dream realm, where the mysterious lady credits his rescue of Kinesee for the Koest family’s trust, urging him to kill Lord Priest Ulrikt at Istinjoln before the Eve of Snows to save the girls, refusing to reveal her name. Iku, also dream-visited, gifts Solineus a Choerkin longsword and supplies, bidding him leave without farewells to spare Kinesee’s tears. Solineus departs Purdonis Bay, meeting Ilpen Gurer and his donkey Ears the Elder on a northern road, securing a ride to Istinjoln via Choerkin Fost. In Bloody Pebble, Solineus spots the slinger from Kinesee’s attack, convinces Ilpen to stay, and lures the bandit to a tavern room, knocking him out with a bottle. He binds and hangs the man from a tree, ensuring his death while leaving coins for burial, steeling himself for Ulrikt’s assassination with newfound resolve.
Tokodin, captive in an Estertok Range cave, oscillates between death and aiding the Colok over three days. Initially favoring death due to shoulder pain, he overdoses on Pimun Bark, hallucinating flight before vomiting, guided by Mecum’s warnings. On the third day, hungover and desperate, he demands answers, tossing dice futilely for guidance. Mecum debates Tokodin’s fate—suggesting the Coward’s Hell—revealing a scroll to Ulrikt about crypt excavations in the Treaty Lands for the Sliver of Star, tied to the Codex and Ailing Stars Prophecy. Shadows possess bodies, not Wakened Dead, feeding on flesh, and Colok fear Ulrikt summoning Zwimfokum. Zjin announces the Steaming Lakes camp’s movement, implying the Sliver’s find, urging Tokodin to warn the Choerkin. Mecum offers poison to avoid betraying the gods, leaving Tokodin torn between dying to preserve faith or living to stop Ulrikt’s potential heresy, dice and flask in hand.
Eliles, nine days before the Eve of Snows, shifts her focus from feral children’s screams to Guntar’s death, seeking answers in Istinjoln’s kitchens. Amid rumors of Colok wars, lavish Eve preparations, and Lord Priest Dunkol’s debauchery, she gleans no clear link to Guntar’s scroll. Ignoring Dareun’s warnings, she targets the library, using feral magic to seduce Rovol into copying Guntar’s message to Ulrikt. The scroll reveals a failed ritual at the Crack of Burdenis’ Fire-Lion Gate, where Shadows and Taken overwhelmed priests, breaching a celestial gate despite Codex-guided efforts and artifacts from catacombs, with Wakened Dead blocking further aid. Eliles, puzzled by the gate and Shadows, debates showing Dareun but opts to hide the scroll, wary of its dangers as she nears her escape, finding petty joy in Rovol’s memory wipe.
Solineus, an amnesiac Emudar warrior, awakens outside the Koest family’s home in Purdonis Bay, roused by Kinesee’s goat, Tengkur, and offered a crushed egg biscuit by the girl. As the Choerkin fishermen, including Iku, prepare their dories, Solineus helps carry a boat to the shore, bantering with Iku about Migu Tortoise. A sudden premonition grips him with pain, urging him to find Kinesee. Alu directs him to a pearl stash northwest, and he sprints along a deer trail, senses heightened, finding Kinesee fleeing four bandits. With uncanny skill, he disables three with a branch—breaking bones and sparing their lives—while the fourth flees. Kinesee reveals her pearls, including a glowing one Solineus imbues with a protective bond, promising to aid her if she rubs it in danger. Iku arrives, and Solineus hands Kinesee over, leaving the bandits’ fate to her father’s justice, shielding her from the violence as they return home.
Ivin Choerkin and the Estertok Wardens, led by Pikarn, don full armor in Ervinhin and ride to the Omindi Pass, examining a priestly ambush site marked by a red post. Ivin finds Colok claw scratches and hand-sized dents in the cliffs, suggesting an unnatural climber, but Pikarn and Rinold dismiss them as natural. They proceed to the Ihomjo mines, meeting miner Fig Lundin and Meliu, a wounded priestess from the Crack of Burdenis. Meliu describes Shadows—entities from the hidden fifth shrine—possessing bodies as Taken, killing Guntar’s group of twenty, with nineteen dead. She offers to guide them to the Crack for books, demanding death over possession. Ivin sees a chance to ally Choerkin and Istinjoln against the Shadows, but he and Pikarn suspect Meliu’s book motive hides deeper intent, planning to enter the caves despite the eerie threat.
Eliles kneels at the Shrine of Elinwe, contemplating her feral magic—tied to the Vanquished Gods, not Sol’s Fire or Erginle’s Life—amid the gem-laden symbols of the Ten Winds. Jinbin interrupts, teasing about ale and revealing no guard drills occurred, then alerts her to an inquisitor bringing three feral children, “plucked falcons,” to Istinjoln. Haunted by past lessons from Dareun and her lie to Jinbin about a vengeful backstory, she watches from the wall as the inquisitor leads the hooded, bound children—aged six or younger—into the Tower of Sol. Overwhelmed by sorrow and anger at their rumored fate in an oubliette, echoing her nightmares, Eliles leaves with Jinbin’s comforting hand, admitting the limits of her endurance, if not revenge.
Tokodin, a monk of Istinjoln, awakens bound and in pain in a dark cave, twelve days before the Eve of Snows, days after a Colok ambush. Mecum, a grizzled bearer presumed dead from a prior attack, tends him, revealing it’s the twelfth of Yistole and they’re high in the Estertok Range as Colok “guests.” Mecum, captured in the Treaty Lands, evades Tokodin’s questions about his mission, focusing on his “nice” funeral. Grolkan, the Colok chieftain who beheaded Loepus, frees Tokodin, demanding he facilitate talks with the Choerkin within three days, denying Colok ate their victims. Torn between aiding the killers of his friends or condemning another to capture, Tokodin sips vile tea, wrestling with defiance and the weight of his choice as Mecum predicts a swift death for refusal.
[[File:Eliles_Portrait.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Eliles Hunvad wearing the white robes of a postulant. (Credit: IIDXX)]]'''Adherent Ranks in the Church of Sol.''' "Sister Continents Canon."<br>
The topic of ranks in the priesthood at Istinjoln Monastery and the Church in general was only lightly touched upon in the sagas for a couple of reasons, but the primary reason is simply that much of it is informal and based upon seniority. Without a POV character seated deep in the politics of the Church, it would’ve been more confusing than useful for the average reader. That said, there are some formal ranks outside what is discussed in the books that might be of interest to some readers.<br>

* '''King Priest/Queen Priestess'''<br>
During the Age of God Wars—some say also during the early periods of the Age of Warlords—the Silone were ruled by a King Priest or Queen Priestess. Lethality and charisma are the hallmarks of these rulers, as they ascend via election rather than the bloodlines of more traditional kingdoms.<br>

* '''Lord Priesthood'''<br>
After the Great Forgetting and as of Remembered Time, the highest rank in the Church is the Lord Priest. Each of the seven Silone clans has a Lord Priest, elected by the priesthood, and they rule with a heavy and rarely questioned hand. Some have been known to call councils for votes or to gather opinions, but for the most part, they act as a theocratic dictatorship.<br>

* '''High Priesthood'''<br>
For most adherents, reaching the High Priesthood is the peak of their aspirations in the Church, but it is also an honor that only about five percent of those achieving the priesthood will attain. In Istinjoln alone, there might be fifty High Priests, and technically, they are all of equal rank in the Church. This is where informal seniority and internal power plays set individuals apart, but the more subtle "count of scars" also comes into play. For instance, Ulrikt, with his three scars, ascended into the High Priesthood at a young age and stood above all but the eldest High Priests immediately. His elders might question his opinions, but without the backing of an eldest High Priest or Lord Priestess Sadevu herself, they would tread lightly to avoid disrespecting him. This jostling power structure does, however, have two major branches: Masters and Hallowed Priests.<br>

* '''Masters'''<br>
These are priests like Master Dareun, who instructed Eliles in ''Eve of Snows''. They focus all their time on bringing up the younger generation, training postulants in the ways of scripture, the gods, the Elements, and prayer. Choosing the path of a Master is both an honor and, in effect, ends any dreams of the High Priesthood. Inside the Masters, there is, once again, an informal pecking order based on skill, politics, and seniority. After thirty years as a Master, one is deemed "elder," and they are accorded a certain extra level of respect that can equal or surpass that of High Priests, even if, officially, the High Priest is of higher rank.<br>

* '''Hallowed Priesthood'''<br>
These members of the priesthood serve outside of Istinjoln and the other six seats of Church power, with three tiers of power simply entitled First, Second, and Third Priest. Every citadel, major shrine, local church, temple, or monastery is headed by this trio of adherents. One of the most prominent ways to achieve First Priest at a prestigious location is to be the political opposition to a new Lord Priest. An assignment to the Temple of Erginle in Choerkin Fost can soothe the ego of a rival, while an assignment to a minor shrine can be akin to being banished or, worse, a prelude to being murdered. First Priests are often High Priests, but they lose a certain prestige by leaving the Church’s more central places of power while gaining direct power at their new location.<br>

* '''Bearers'''<br>
Message Bearers hold a peculiar distinction within the ranks of the Church that rivals that of Third Priests in prestige. Bearers also retain the ability to continue their climb into the ranks, and High Priests who were once Bearers are accorded an additional level of respect. Being a Bearer also improves the odds of achieving the High Priesthood, so long as they survive, of course.<br>

* '''Priests'''<br>
Adherents, both young and old, fall into this level of the Church. For some, it is a stepping stone to great things; for the remainder, it is the height of their achievements within the Church. Seniority plays a role here, but after a point, being an "elder" priest, for some, becomes as much an insult as a source of pride. Young priests have hope of advancing, while the old know their journey is finished. The ranks here are, therefore, full of backstabbing and nastiness on both ends of the spectrum: those waging internal wars to advance and those bitter that they will climb no higher. Outside of those known as elder priests, the only other informal name given is that of ascendant, which a priest is often labeled in the first year or two after achieving the priesthood.<br>

* '''Monks'''<br>
These folks are postulants who failed their trials. They hold the power of prayer, but the gods don’t favor them with the power priests can achieve. They are the backbone of Istinjoln and other holy locations, serving as guards or in other positions beneath a priest, such as manual labor in the brewery. On failing as a postulant, most undergo more rigorous training in hand-to-hand combat. Ranks among the monks are informal, but while seniority can play a role, there is another major factor: how many years they served as a postulant before failing. Those who were close to the priesthood earn a greater level of respect.<br>

* '''Postulants'''<br>
There are three tiers of postulant in the Church: Serving Postulant, Hooded Postulant, and Barefoot Postulant, and they are all based upon how many years the postulant is along in their training. The Barefoot is in years one through four of their training, the Hooded is in years five through eight—and is named such because they have earned a hood for their robes—and the Serving Postulant is in years nine through twelve of training. It should be noted that Barefoot Postulants are not, in fact, barefoot except during certain ceremonies. Other than these time-based tiers, postulants earn respect by their count of scars and by what Element they specialize in, with Fire being the most prestigious.
Seventeen days before the Eve of Snows, Tokodin, a monk from Istinjoln Monastery, plays Hawk and Snake, a high-stakes dice game, in the Chanting Caverns with his childhood friend Meliu, now a priestess, and others. Under the watchful eye of the formidable Angin, Tokodin’s luck sours, draining his coins despite the thrill. As the game ends, ominous flashes and rumbles rise from the Crack of Burdenis, a sacred chasm. The disturbances escalate into chaos—explosions, screams, and eerie lights signal disaster below. A battered priest emerges, clutching scrolls and warning of a failed "diamond" and approaching "hells." Tokodin joins Guntar’s escort to deliver a critical message to Istinjoln, with Meliu leading them through a shortcut. As they flee, the cavern ignites with fire and lightning; Angin falls to an unseen force amid a desperate stand by the holy defenders. Stricken with dread, Tokodin pushes the group to hasten their escape from the unfolding nightmare.

Solineus, guided by Helelindin magic and hospitality, reaches Nosuperelôn after a swift journey up the Mâbuhon River. Reuniting with Lelishen, he meets his son Veldehar, a Trelelunin-human hybrid whose existence defies Edan lore, prompting Lelishen to reject Solineus’s marriage proposal to protect the child from Edan judgment. Veldehar’s interaction with the Twins, divine swords that speak to him without harm, unsettles Solineus and Lelishen, hinting at their Celestial connection and the boy’s unique nature. Lelishen reveals the Malstefnê king’s assassination has shifted war north, but Ivin and Kinesee march south with Kingdomer armies, stirring trouble. Discussing the Lady’s warning of a “White Lion,” possibly linked to the god Rin, Solineus ponders her motives and the Twins’ role in summoning Kûmjotu-Kî, a primordial dragon of immense power. Alone with Lelishen, they climb a mountain to discuss Veldehar’s future and the Twins’ Celestial ties, theorizing the Lady’s dream communications stem from a spiritual link akin to the swords or Kinesee’s pearl. Their talk is interrupted by Ôgrêt, massive horned beasts, whose leader challenges them with a ritual display. Solineus counters by slicing the Ôgrêt’s iron staff with the Sister and invoking Kûmjotu-Kî, earning a dismissive yet nonviolent response. As the Ôgrêt depart, Solineus and Lelishen, relieved, banter about his adventures and Sîu’s affections, deepening their bond while grappling with the uncertainties of Veldehar’s safety and the looming southern conflicts.
Reeling from her failed ambush against the Yellow-Eye slavers, improvises a daring plan to confront their Crone, a powerful Breath Stealer witch. Reflecting on Solineus’s bold tactics, she desecrates a Yellow-Eye corpse to provoke the camp, urinating on it to incite outrage. As the Crone and her warriors cross the river, Meliu hides, using prayers of Light, Dark, and Life to unleash terror, killing several with Dark-induced horrors while luring others with a decoy Light. Charging the Crone, Meliu withstands arrows and the witch’s suffocating power, tackling her and enveloping them in Dark, where she confronts the Crone’s fears, including a visions of a white lion with red eyes that names Meliu “Daughter of Kibole.” Killing the Crone, Meliu heals her wounds with Life, mirroring legendary feats from the Codex of Sol, and uses Dark to rout or capture the remaining Yellow-Eyes, sparing one she dubs “Lucky.” Exhausted but triumphant, Meliu reunites with Polus, who has captured another Yellow-Eye and a boat, revealing their own skirmish. Collapsing in a canoe, Meliu dreams of the white lion, now calling her “Daughter of Erginle,” as she grapples with her divine favor and the mysterious visions, cementing her resolve to press forward despite her injuries.
As Ivin plans fortifications and navigates Kingdomer road-building motives, Kinesee prepares to confront him with her decision, using their marital bond to assert her place at his side, while the group braces for the dangers awaiting in Green Mountain.
Solineus navigates the perilous Nebuhol Pinch, relying on the Contessa Polênu Juvilêus’s fleet, flying Mostul Ûbar’s flag, to evade Boboru patrols. Sequestered below deck with his men, except for Sîu, Solineus reaches the Mâbuhon River’s mouth without incident, suspecting Polênu’s ties to the Boboru. As they part, Polênu cryptically acknowledges knowing him, deepening their mysterious connection. A dream from the Lady warns of a “White Lion” and instructs Solineus to confront a Helelindin riverboat captain about his wife’s infidelity. Leading his thirty Silone warriors, Solineus battles exhaustion and doubt, guided by Kinesee’s pearl, which oddly suggests she’s west, conflicting with maps. At the river, they meet Captain Jebuhûk, and Solineus delivers the Lady’s message, accusing the captain’s wife of bearing Nedarô’s child. Stunned, Jebuhûk initially drifts away but returns, demanding answers. Solineus offers a tale of his prophetic dream for passage west, securing the boat’s approach. As Sîu questions the White Lion’s significance, Solineus grapples with the dream’s truth and its ominous implications, uncertain of the Lady’s motives but committed to reaching his son and the Helelindin king amidst looming threats.
Eliles, determined to unmask the Face of Ulrikt, experiments with Jinbin to disrupt divine prayers, using the Sliver of Star to overpower Jinbin’s Light prayer and manipulate her own eye color with Spirit, though Life yields less success. Suspecting the Face’s shape-shifting relies on a complex blend of Air, Spirit, and Life—or possibly an artifact—she seeks advice from Fedenu, whom she believes is a dragon hiding among priests. Fedenu’s cryptic response pushes Eliles to devise a public trial to expose the Face, accusing Reinus to draw the elusive figure into the open. With Artus and Reinus, she plans to use Temeru as the prosecuting Ax, balancing priest and islander witnesses to maintain fairness while betting on the Face’s curiosity or arrogance to attend. Eliles aims to disrupt the Face’s prayer during the trial, revealing their true identity before the crowd. Despite risks of failure sparking conflict or Reinus facing execution, Eliles commits to protecting him, prepared to kill the Face if necessary, while planning weeks of practice to refine her strategy and gather more insights.
Ivin, atop the Kingdomer-built wall, grapples with the Malstefnê army’s sudden withdrawal, attributed to the enigmatic Face of Ulrikt, though doubts linger among clan lords like Leto Ravinrin, who reveals whispers of crowning Ivin king—a title he vehemently rejects. Leto’s resentment over Kinesee’s marriage to Ivin surfaces, straining their bond. The Face, appearing as postulant Deelee and then Ulrikt, confirms orchestrating the Malstefnê’s retreat by manipulating events in Notôlhof, ensuring a year’s respite and weakening the Malôbund. Ivin, wary of Ulrikt’s motives, learns the Face was present at his father Kotin’s death, possibly as the servant Joslin, who vanished after Tokodin’s poisoning. In a late-night meeting with Kinesee, Roplin, and Inisfer, Ivin theorizes Joslin as the Face, a shape-shifting priest responsible for multiple murders. Facing the moral weight of using the Face’s ruthlessness, Ivin plans to march south to Green Mountain, preparing for an inevitable confrontation with the Face, who may target him per prophecy, while Kinesee reluctantly agrees to stay at Forest’s Gate, as the group resolves to kill the elusive demon when the time comes.
The Face of Ulrikt—known here as the Wraith of Qwôhar—orchestrates a deadly deception in Notôlhof, capital of the Malstefnê Nation. Binôtu Kodûl, a scout delivering messages from Ôlisbenar, is burned alive with his party in a gatehouse trap, ordered by Captain Hûlm under vague directives. Hûlm, coerced by the Wraith posing as Fulmor, reveals Ôlisbenar’s command to Lady Serilu at The Singing Spire, who unwittingly discloses her connection to Lord Kervik. The Wraith, manipulating Kervik in the guise of Serilu, extracts royal schedules before killing him. At a council meeting, Kervik’s warnings about the Wraith are dismissed by King Trefifân, who later meets the Wraith in the Chamber of Muzod, where it assumes his form and forces him to write a false letter blaming Litrâ for murdering his family. The Wraith, having slain the royal family, manipulates Ôlisbenar, revealing its triumph in fulfilling his unintended orders to destabilize the Malstefnê. Offering Ôlisbenar the throne in exchange for leading a war against Litrâ, the Wraith ensures his compliance with threats and vanishes, leaving Ôlisbenar to grapple with his new role and the Wraith’s lingering menace, contemplating kingship over a vulnerable realm.
Pikarn leads a small Silone group through rain-soaked foothills with Oldenu, aiming to ally with the Colok against Shadows and Taken. Six days from Berul, they find signs of recent Colok battles with Taken, but Shadows soon stalk them, forcing Pikarn to use water-filled wineskins as a defense. Rikis’s horn blast draws a Colok hunting party, who use the Silone as bait to ambush the Shadows, revealing a tense but cooperative dynamic. At Snow’s Eye, Pikarn negotiates with Zjin, learning three Edan headed north, possibly to the Steaming Lakes, to study the Queen Mother’s Celestial Gate. Proposing a Choerkin-Colok alliance to settle the Sobuno River islands and purge Kaludor of Taken, Pikarn secures Zjin’s commitment to rally tribes and confer with Grolkan at Istinjoln. Despite the looming threat of the demon Marukane and Edan secrecy, Pikarn’s strategic vision and rapport with the Colok lay the groundwork for a united front, bolstered by Oldenu’s wry acknowledgment of his persistent optimism.
